He sings at night, to whomever listens. A Poem

via Daily Prompt: TrillĀ

He sings at night, to whomever listens

A call from the Gods, a signal to heed

Take note, it is time for loved ones to pass

Prepare, be ready, three days you will need

The trill is clear, commands instant attention

Who will it be, which whanau of mine

We lay and we listen whilst ponder of whom

The end of a life has come, it is time

Maori people believed that if the Ruru (Morepork) sung near your window at night, it was a message from the Gods letting you know that someone close to you has just died. Having experienced this many times, whilst the Ruru sung, I’d lay in the dark paying silent respect to the soul that was passing.

It’s a very moving moment.
